How to update Dell servers using bootable iso

If update using Lifecycle controller is not possible or it fails we can do this

1- Update Drac/Lifecycle controller from Drac’s web interface

2- Download the bootable iso media for the server model from the following link

http://www.dell.com/Support/Article/us/en/04/SLN296511

3- Mount it in Drac and boot the server to virtual media and update the server

4- Try to update the server from Lifecycle controller

 Some remarks

1- If the bootable iso doesn’t exist in the above link it can be created using Dell Repository Manager.

2- For servers generation 10 and older it is better to use physical media (burn the iso on disk and use DVD drive)

3- The above method was used for Dell R220 servers because the initial attempt for update from Lifecycle controller failed.

Dell Repository Manager and Dell SUU (system update utility)

http://elmaskubilay.blogspot.ca/2014/06/updating-dell-servers.html

We can use lifecycle controller and local physical media SUU if the server that we want to update, doesn’t have access to internet and we have physical access to it:

However:

Do not use the RAC/iDRAC virtual media to remotely run SUU on a system. This procedure ends the virtual media connection, resulting in an unsuccessful SUU update.(144487)

In contrast:

Dell Repository Manager: Create a bundle and export it to bootable Linux iso and then it can be used in Drac’s virtual media
